Band Drains, also known as Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVDs), are an effective ground improvement solution used to accelerate the consolidation of soft, compressible soils.
Installed in conjunction with surcharge loading, they provide vertical drainage paths that allow excess pore water pressure to dissipate more rapidly, significantly reducing settlement times while improving overall ground stability.
Band drains are installed using a specialist stitcher mast, which pushes a hollow steel mandrel containing the prefabricated drain to the required design depth or refusal. The mandrel is then withdrawn, leaving the drain securely anchored within the ground before the process is repeated at the next predetermined location.
Once installation is complete, surcharge loading is typically placed over the treated area. The vertical drains provide short drainage paths, allowing pore water pressure to dissipate rapidly and significantly accelerating the consolidation of the underlying soils.
This simple and efficient installation process enables large treatment areas to be completed quickly while minimising disruption to surrounding operations.
